Dance -
This year's theme for homecoming is Sunset Paradise! Please join us on Saturday the 26th at 7:00pm till 10:00pm to enjoy the getaway from school that we all need and deserve. Coronation will follow at 9:30pm. Doors open to the public at 9:15pm. Ticket sales will start on Friday, September 18th. Individual tickets will be 15 dollars and couple tickets will be sold for 25. Once again we hope to see you all there!

Powderpuff -
It's time for our CHS girls to show the boys how it's done! Our annual Powderpuff game will be held September 23rd at 5:15 pm on the W.O. Smith field. While our tough football boys cheer the girls on, we watch to see which class will take the lead this year and prove to be the best. Directly after the game, there will be a bonfire in the back of the parking lot. We hope to see everyone there!

Parade -
This year's Sunset Paradise theme is sure to bring some nice tropical floats to this year's parade. The parade starts from the Randolph County Courthouse and goes to Chester High School. Join us at 4pm to watch the parade walk on by celebrating this year's homecoming week. We are all excited to see what our classes come up with this year. We hope to see you there!

CHS 9/11 SCHEDULING ANNOUNCEMENT (CORRECTION)
Chester High School students and families, we have made a few adjustments to Friday’s schedule to allow time for a very important All-School Assembly. Please review the information below carefully and make sure all students are aware of the schedule and expectations for the day.

11:30 Dismissal for Students
3-minute passing periods will be in place throughout the day.
All-school lunch will take place at the end of the school day.
We will hold an All-School Assembly featuring:
A remembrance of September 11
A sendoff and salute to Mr. “Captain” Ruehling
A Pep Rally to close out the day
Start-Up students should report to school for 3rd Period at 8:44 a.m.
Morning Opt-Out students should report to school by 2nd Period at 8:20 a.m.
There will be no Afternoon Opt-Out. Students should report to the Media Center for 8th Period.
Workforce students need to make appropriate arrangements with their Workforce instructor regarding Friday’s schedule.
CCSI students will attend CCSI as usual and will be excused from 6th and 7th Periods. Upon returning to CHS, students should report directly to their 8th Period class at the appropriate time.

CHS AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING PROGRAM
Chester High School offers after-school tutoring every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:10–4:10 p.m. in Room B115 (Mrs. Hankins’ classroom).

Students may use this time to receive academic assistance, work on homework with support available, make up tests or quizzes, or receive independent test-preparation assistance for the ACT and SAT.

This program is available to support all CHS students in their academic success. Whether you need help with an assignment, a quiet place to work, or additional test preparation, we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity.

Transportation available if needed.

CGS presents 33 HIVE awards to start the school year
Students are rewarded for demonstrating Respect, Responsibility, Safety, and Empathy

Chester Grade School recognized 33 students on Friday September 4, 2026 in grades Kindergarten through 8th, for demonstrating the “HIVE” PBIS good character traits of either Respect, Responsibility, Safety, or Empathy.
There are four “HIVE” PBIS characteristics that teachers and staff at CGS look for and encourage every day. Students are praised for 1) Having Respect, 2) Initiating Responsibility, Valuing Safety, and Encouraging Empathy. (HIVE).
Teachers and staff can nominate students for demonstrating one or more of these traits. Nominations are made twice a month. Students observed using at least one of these traits are eligible for nomination.
For the Friday September 4, 2026 All-School awards program there were 33 students who received awards, 16 for Respect, 11 for Responsibility, 1 for Safety, and 5 for Empathy. Those students are listed below.
RESPECT: (16) Roxie Tucker, Brysen Clinton, Rowan Liter, Lydia Law, Kase Miles, Harper Lohman, Casey Nieweglowski, Oliver Renner, Harper Moist, Mathew Holdman, Juan Maldonado Hernendez, Gracelynn Stephens, Brady Cushman, Dayana Maldonado Hernandez, Evelyn Galste, and Lowell Braddy.
RESPONSIBILITY: (11): Jensen Uhrhan, Saige Peters, Axel Ried, Carter Belton, Yanet Rafael, Natalie Guethle, Jacelyn Reeves, Breanna Schatte, Chloe Keeton, Lizzy Absher, Zaeven Thompson.

Each student was recognized at the first HIVE All-School Assembly of the 2026-2027 school year. Each received a certificate and approved recipients were included in a group photo. Samantha Yankee is the new Coordinator of the HIVE Program. The EMCEE for the assembly was Danielle Conway, Administrative Assistant.

CHS PLAYER OF THE WEEK AND PRACTICE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Special Teams Player of the Week: # 17 Danny Worley Danny Worley (# 17) a 6"1, 185 Lb. Junior Running Back & Linebacker, is the Week 2 "Special Teams Player of the Week" for the Chester High School Football YellowJackets. This award is bestowed upon the player each week that demonstrates the best performance on the Special Teams Unit. Against the Paris Tigers on Saturday August 22 Worley ran six times for a total of 32 yards. He also caught one pass for 13 yards. He further returned a kickoff for 26 yards and recorded three First Downs for his team. Worley is a junior at CHS and works hard each day. Coaches vote on the winner of this award based on the performance each week. The Special Teams Player of the Week is sponsored by Korando Heating and Cooling of Chester. Jim Beers Photo Practice Player of the Week: # 15 Anthony Armenta Anthony Armenta (# 15) a 5"8, 155 Lb., Senior Wide Receiver and Defensive Back is the Week 2 "Practice Player of the Week" for the Chester High School Football YellowJackets. This award is presented to the YellowJacket player who works the hardest throughout the week in practice and strives to help make his teammates better. This player may not always appear on the weekly game stats but works the hardest and gives 100% at practice to help his teammates function their best. CHS Football “Practice Players” of Week 1

# 9 Reed Petrowske and # 35 Bently Valleroy are the Week 1 “Practice Players” of the Week for the Chester High School YellowJacket Football Team. The CHS Weekly Football Awards are chosen by a vote of all CHS Football Coaches and based by the performances of the players selected for a respective week.
# 9 Reed Petrowske is a 6’2, 175 Lb. Sophomore Running Back and Linebacker. # 35 Bently Valleroy is a 5’7, 170 Lb. Running Back and Linebacker. Both players work hard each day and gives his best to help his YellowJacket squad function at its highest level.
Both boys have put in hard work throughout the summer pre-season and first days of the 2026 official season to prepare for a successful year. For their efforts, these YellowJacket Football Players have earned the titles of “Week 1 Practice Players of the Week”.
The “Practice Players of the Week” awards are sponsored by Knight Hawk Coal and honor the player (s) who give their best efforts and work the hardest to help the team get better.

Lady Jackets Volleyball sweeps Anna-Jonesboro in 2026 season opener
Freshmen and Varsity win in two sets; JV wins in three sets to sweep the Lady Wildcats

Tuesday August 25 was the season opener for Chester High School Lady Jacket Volleyball. A large crowd filled Colbert Memorial Gymnasium to support the Lady Jackets. All three levels, Freshmen, JV and Varsity, competed, to showcase the 2026 season for loyal and very supportive fans.
The 10-member Freshmen Team, featuring seven Freshmen and supplemented by three sophomores, opened the action at 5:00 p.m. Due to low numbers at the freshmen level, it was necessary to have three members of the sophomore group to assist the freshmen in order to have enough plyers to allow for substitutions.
Freshmen players included (14) Alexis House, OH/MB, (23) Alexa Duvall, MB, (1) Alyssa Lemanski, OH, (11) Aubree Kumke, Libero/DS, (20) Braelynn Lyons, (20), MB, (55) Kinsley Hecht, OH/MB, and (33) Mabrie Cushman, S. Sophomores include (6) Kinsley Davitz, DS, (22) Brystol Stellhorn, MB, and (25) Hadlie Cushman, S. The Freshman Team won in two commanding sets, 21-10 and 21-9.
The Junior Varsity Team (JV) included all seven freshmen, all three sophomores, and six juniors for a total roster of 16 players. Freshmen and sophomores are listed above with the Freshman Team description.
Juniors include (4) Marlie Caby, S, (17) Jaden Bert, Libero/DS, (21) Maddie Hurst-Roy, MB, (7) Ashley Garcia-Sanchez, DS, (35) Taylor Korando, OH/DS, and (26) Maci Ahring, MB/OPP.
The JV won the match, but made things extremely interesting, taking all three sets to secure the win.
Chester led early in Set 1, but allowed AJ to catch up and eventually win the first set, 23-25. In Set 2, both teams fought hard. Chester led early, but AJ caught up to tie the score and eventually took the lead near the end. The Lady Jackets, however, fought hard to overtake the Lady Wildcats with a 25-22 victory. This forced a third set to break the 1-1 tie. In the tie-breaker, it was neck-and-neck right up until the end. Chester played well when it counted, however, to win Set 3, 15-13, and the match.
The Varsity Team played hard and beat Anna-Jonesboro in straight sets, 26-24 and 25-17. This year’s Varsity has a roster of 13 players including two freshmen, one sophomore, six juniors, and four seniors.
Freshmen are Alexa Duvall and Braelynn Lyons. They are listed above in the Freshman Team report. The lone sophomore is (2) Morgan Nanney, OH. Juniors are Jaden Bert, Marlie Caby, Maddie Hurst-Roy, Taylor Korando, Hanna Crow, and Ashley Garcia-Sanchez (all who are listed above in the JV Team description) and (12) Hannah Crow, OH/DS. The four senior standouts are (3) Aleah Eggemeyer, S, (5) Aubrey Colvis, MB, (10) Avery Hasemeyer, OPP, and (9) Joella Eggemeyer, LIBERO.
The Varsity match was hard-fought and went down to the wire! Set 1 featured five ties, one of which occurred at the 24-24 mark. The Lady Wildcats never led in the set. Aleah Eggemeyer came in and served the final two winning points to win Set 1.
Set 2 featured two lead changes early, and three ties, 2-2, 3-3, and 7-7. AJ led just once, 4-3, otherwise the Lady Jackets led the rest of the set. Chester’s biggest lead was nine points, 19-10, after going on a 9-0 run. The Wildcats outscored the Jackets 7-6 down the stretch, but Chester’s big lead enabled them to win by eight points, 25-17.
Head Coach, Colleen Runge commented after the game, “I am proud of all the girls and their performances. I would like to highlight Joella Eggemeyer for taking on the role of Libero this year. It is out of her comfort zone and I couldn’t be more proud of her determination and dedication to learning the new position and doing it well!”
Hannah Crow also stepped up in the outside hitter position this year. She had a great game with four kills! She is really starting to find her groove out there!”
Aubrey Colvis led the team in kills with three. Aleah Eggemeyer had 17 assists. Joella Eggemeyer and Hannah Crow each had nine digs apiece. Avery Hasemeyer killed at the serving line with five aces, followed by Joella Eggemeyer who had three aces.”
The Lady Jackets return to CHS Colbert Gymnasium Thursday August 27 to host East Alton-Wood River in three matches. The Freshmen start at 5 p.m. The JV play at 6 p.m., followed by the nightcap game with the Varsity at 7:30 p.m.
Next Week Chester will hit the road. Lady Jackets will play at Wesclin in the Cahokia Conference opener Tuesday September 1. All three levels will play. Saturday September 5 the Lady Jackets will compete at the 2026 Carbondale High School Tournament. This event starts at 9 a.m.
